Beginning with the rise of nation states in the seventeenth century, this course traces the intellectual, political, religious, and social trends that formed the modern world. Important elements include the Scientific Revolution, the political transformations beginning with the American and French Revolutions, the rise of industry, imperialism, the world wars, and the direction of Western culture in the Cold War and after.
