This is a lecture and laboratory course that serves as an introduction to Earth Science with an emphasis on physical geology. Major topics include the formation and structure of Earth, geologic time, plate tectonics, mineral and rock identification, the rock cycle, the water cycle, natural hazards, topographic and geologic map reading, human impacts on the Earth and reliance on natural resources, and climate changes through time. Laboratory activities include in-class investigations and field trips to explore the exemplary natural environments found in southern Illinois.
