John A. Logan College is committed to accountability and continuous improvement through the systematic assessment of student learning outcomes. Assessment practices are designed to ensure that students achieve clearly articulated learning outcomes that support academic success, workforce preparation, transfer readiness, and lifelong learning. Assessment is an institution‑wide responsibility and reflects the College’s commitment to using evidence to improve teaching, learning, and student support services.
Assessment of student learning is structured and aligned across multiple levels. In every course, faculty identify Course‑Level Outcomes (CLOs) and determine appropriate methods for assessing student achievement. Course‑level outcomes are mapped to Program‑Level Outcomes (PLOs) and Division‑Level Outcomes (DLOs), which are further aligned with the College’s Institutional‑Level Outcomes (ILOs). This integrated framework ensures coherence across curricula and supports meaningful analysis of student learning.
At the institutional level, assessment focuses on the development of core competencies expected of all graduates, including communication, critical thinking, cultural and global awareness, information literacy, and quantitative reasoning. These outcomes provide a common foundation for evaluating student learning across academic programs and instructional contexts.
Division‑level assessment reflects the distinct educational goals of the College’s academic divisions. Within the Arts and Sciences Division, assessment emphasizes transfer readiness, lifelong learning practices, and ethical citizenship. The Career and Technical Education Division focuses assessment on industry‑specific skills, workplace safety practices, problem‑solving techniques, effective communication, and sustainable practices. In the Health Sciences Division, assessment addresses students’ ability to provide safe patient care, apply sound decision‑making skills, demonstrate professionalism, and communicate effectively in clinical and professional settings.
In addition to curricular assessment, John A. Logan College is developing assessment practices for student learning that occurs outside of traditional coursework. These early efforts are led by Student Affairs and are designed to align student learning experiences beyond the classroom with the College’s institutional learning outcomes. Student Affairs has established division‑level outcomes that emphasize student learning, personal development and well‑being, and sense of belonging, and these outcomes are vertically aligned with the College’s institutional learning outcomes.
As part of this developmental work, selected Student Affairs departments have begun identifying program‑level outcomes and piloting assessment activities. Initial efforts have focused on areas such as Student Life, Recruitment, and Financial Aid, with assessment activities designed to evaluate student learning in specific programs and events. These pilot efforts support the College’s broader goal of building capacity for assessing student learning in cocurricular contexts and using results to inform program improvement.
Assessment of student learning at John A. Logan College is a shared institutional responsibility involving faculty, academic affairs professionals, student affairs professionals, and support staff. Assessment results are reviewed, reflected upon, and used to guide improvements in instruction, programs, and services. Through its comprehensive and evolving approach to assessment, the College affirms its commitment to accountability, transparency, and continuous improvement in support of its mission to enrich lives through learning and community engagement.
